Guy Duininck: Demonic Hybrids?
In Genesis 6, we find this interesting passage,
1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
3 And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
6 And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
7 And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
From these verses, some Christians have developed a theology that fallen angels bred with women and created a race of giants - a hybrid of angel and human - that this is the reason God destroyed the earth with a flood, and that this same thing will occur again in the last days - that fallen angels will again procreate with women and create an angel-human hybrid.
Here are some things to consider along these lines:
1] According to Jesus, angels are asexual.
2] In our natural world, even cows and horses cannot breed; how could it be that angels and humans can interbreed?
3] If angels can take women at their will and breed with them, why don't they do it all the time?
4] Notice that in verse 2 above, it says that "the sons of God" saw the daughters of men and took wives of them. To have wives describes a long and ongoing relationship resulting, usually, in a family. This verse doesn't say, "angels violated women against their will and hybrids resulted."
5] Notice that in verse 4, it says that the "sons of God" had relations with the daughters of men and had children with them. This verse is a follow on to verse 2. It says that from these relations "children" were born and those children became mighty "men" and "men" of renown. The words "children" and "men" don't suggest "hybrid." It doesn't seem from verses 2 and 4 that there is a strong argument for saying that the "sons of God" were angels who violated women and had hybrids. The sons of God took wives and had children. Some of those children, it says, became men of renown; not hybrids of renown.
6] Notice - and this is important - that Scripture says, "There were giants in the earth in those days." THEN it says, "and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them." Notice that giants being in the earth does not FOLLOW the sons of God going into the daughters of men, but PRECEDES it. This somewhat ruins the argument which says that giants - hybrids - resulted from the sons of God having relations with the daughters of men. Giants didn't result from that, but were already there; hence the words, "after that."
Jesus said that in the last days, it would be like the days of Noah. Some take those words of Jesus about the last days, link them with their doctrine of hybrids resulting from fallen angels having sexual relations with women, and conclude that in the last days angels will again be forcing themselves on women and producing hybrids - and angel/human creature - to facilitate Satan's end time schemes.
Personally, I don't agree with the teaching based on Genesis 6 that fallen angels bred with women in Genesis, produced hybrids, and caused God to destroy the earth and that this very same thing will happen again in the last days. This interpretation would make a great movie, but for all the reasons I stated above, and some others, I disagree with that doctrine.
